and
Friendly Fire over on Got it, Ma!
Those are my "2 to read," now I give you "2 to see." So I've been to the movies a lot lately - that's what happens when work appointments cancel and I'm in a random city in the middle of the day with time to kill before another meeting. I head off to a matinee. The result is that for the first time in a loooong time, I have seen most of the movies that are currently playing in mainstream American movie theaters right now. Here are my 2 favorites:
Bridesmaids. Fucking hilarious. "The Hangover"/a female-driven Judd Apatow-esque comedy for women. Jon Hamm is even in it. Now go see that shit.
Super 8. Like "The Goonies," meets "Independence Day," meets a bunch of kids who like "Night of the Living Dead." I wasn't prepared for the range of emotions this movie would bring out in me. It also did a great job of very, very subtly and deftly upending gender and racial stereotypes.
Happy weekend!

Thanks for the links. I love finding new smart blogs.
Here's my mini movie rant: I saw Rabbit Hole over the weekend and while the movie itself was okay, Nicole Kidman's hair was not. Wtf? Bad hair doesn't make me forget it's Nicole Kidman I'm watching onscreen.
Tate got to see Cars 2 over the weekend but he, like most reviewers, didn't care for it.
I saw Bridesmaids and LOVED it. I want to see Super 8 (because it has Coach! From Friday Night Lights!) but since I just spent the weekend away with DH sans kids (awesome), I may have used up my babysitter quotient for the month. Will probably have to wait until it comes out on video.
Thanks for the links! I'm definitly going to put blue milk in my Reader, since so many of my smart bloggy friends recommend the site and every time I've read something there I've been impressed.
I was going to see Super 8 with my dad when I was at the beach, but the idea of sitting in a theater with my bum knee stopped me. I'll probably have to wait for it to come out on DVD.
@hush - I just wanted to say that I love your writing style, personally. And I don't think any other blogger I follow makes me laugh out loud so often, which, trust me, I need these days.
One of these days I'll see a movie in the theater again, but in the meantime, I'm spending my babysitting quotient -- as Jac said so well -- on dinners out and concerts.
That said, I haven't actually had a night out at all since my daughter was born six months ago, which is something that has to change, and soon.
@mom2boy - "Rabbit Hole" is on my list! Yeah, everyone is hating "Cars 2" - thank you for letting me know, we'll skip it.
@Jac - Thanks for reminding me about "Friday Night Lights". I'll have to see if I can add that to my Netflix queue.
@caramama - Yeah, I really enjoy blue milk - she's an amazing writer and is really thoughtful about reigning in and challenging some of the silly One True Way-ism I see on too many feminist blogs.
@Parisienne Mais Presque - Awww, shucks. Thank you, it brings me a lot of joy to make people laugh (with me, instead of at me for a change.)
